General Facts :
Similar with the English Foxhound, the American Foxhound was created by its breeders to be taller and lighter, to have a keener sense of smell and also to be faster during chases. The dog has long front legs which are very straight boned. The dog’s head is long with a large skull. Eyes are either brown or hazel with a very sweet and imploring expression. Ears are wide and flat to the head. The dog carries its tail cheerfully; the coat is short and hard and it can come in any color.
A very affectionate, loving and gentle dog at home; intense warrior and very brave during hunts, making him a very versatile dog. The American Foxhound can get along very well with other dogs thanks to its pack-hunting background but it is advisable not to let him with non-canine pets. These dogs are good with children. A word of advice regarding this breed, they will take off after an interesting scent so keeping him in a leash is a must.
Origin :
The American Foxhound is a descendent from the English hounds which were brought to America in 1650 and were bred over 100 years later to a French hound sent as a gift by Lafayette to George Washington. By combining the French and the English, the American Foxhound was created. In the 17 th century they were used for seeking out Indians but later on they became efficient at hunting wild animals.

Height : Between 21 and 25 inches ( approximately 53 to 64 centimeters )
Weight : Between 65 an 75 pounds ( approximately 29 to 34 kilos )

The American Foxhound has a melodious bark ( as a matter of fact, their bark was used in several songs ). These dogs don’t have any known genetic health problems. Their smooth and short haired coat is easy to groom, shampooing should be done only when necessary. This dog needs a lot of exercise so keeping him indoors isn’t recommended as they need a lot of space to run around.
Some of the American Foxhound’s talents are hunting, agility, watchdogging and tracking. A very versatile dog capable of adapting to the family life but also very efficient as a hunting dog, recommended for fox hunting. Their life expectancy is around 11 years.
