Hunting Dogs Reviews

Fox trapping may be useful for the control of these nuisance animals but is not efficient as a general fox control method. In urban or residential areas, cage traps are preferred over leg hold traps as fewer injuries are sustained, non-target animals can be released unharmed and trapped foxes can be transported away from the area for euthanasia.

Equipment Required :

•  Accepted padded-jaws suitable for capturing foxes are a must ( eg. Victor Soft-Catch trap no.1 ½ or no.3 ). It is forbidden to use steel-jawed fox traps in many of parts of the U.S.

•  The trap’s jaws shouldn’t have teeth. The jaws should be offset in order to increase the distance between them when closed ( eg. 6-8mm should remain when the jaws are fully closed ).

•  Every jaw should have a rubber-like pad to cushion the impact of the trap’s jaws on the limb and also to prevent the limb to slide out. The padding will fill the offset gap when the trap’s jaws are closed.

•  The trap must have a spring situated in the anchor chain to behave as a shock absorber thus diminishing the chances of dislocation of the captured limb. In order to allow the trap to twist as the fox attempts to escape, swivels must be situated on both ends of the anchor chain.

Selection Of Trap Sites :

•  The fox trap should be placed along tracks/trails or other areas that are frequented by foxes like scratch points, around carcasses and scent pads. Traps shouldn’t be placed in the near vicinity of a fence, tree, bush and others areas in which the trapped fox may become entangled.

•  Every trap site must be recorded and marked so that they will be readily available for others in case the trapper can’t return to check the traps.

Placing And Setting A Trap :

•  Traps should be placed at the end of each day and they should be checked early in the morning the following day. If fox traps are left set during the day, they must be checked again later in the afternoon.

•  Before placing a trap, the trapper must ensure that the trap is working properly.

•  Traps must only be anchored to stakes/fixed objects if there is a shock absorbing device like a spring fitted to the anchor chain and a swivel attaching the chain to the trap. It is recommended to use a short length chain ( approx. 50 cm ). Alternatively, the trap can be tied to “drags“, objects such as rocks, solid pieces of steel or small logs that will move when the fox pulls against the trap.

•  The trapper must set the trap and place it in a hole, in the ground. The trapper must know for sure if the surrounding shrubs/debris won’t interfere with the trap’s spring mechanism.

•  The trapper must camouflage the area around the trap using leaves, grass debris or others but he must leave a slightly cleared area of 10 to 15cm over the plate’s area.

•  The trapper must place the bait/lure at a suitable distance away so that the incoming fox is likely to step on the trap and smell it. ( eg. a rock behind a trap or a slightly elevated clump of grass ).
